The Best Spots for Flyfishing in Belize

Belize is known throughout the world as an outstanding fishing destination for anglers of all experience levels. The scenery is, of course, absolutely gorgeous, and at the right time of year the weather is perfect for relaxation and fishing. But the quality of the fishing is also impeccable, with the “big three” sport fish being bonefish, tarpon and permit (all of which are catch and release).

Sure, you’re not going to be able to take any of these fish home with you, but we can guarantee you that any time you’re able to chase these fish and get them biting, you’re going to have a great time with it. Belize makes for an especially ideal habitat for all three of these fish, because not only does it have the second-largest barrier reef in the world, but it also has a wide network of rivers, creeks and lagoons, a series of small caves and shallow water flats and some beautiful mangrove islands. Combine all of these geographical features, and you have a perfect spot for marine life, and thus, fishing.

Here are a few of the best spots you can hit up for Belize fly fishing if you want to catch any of these sport fish:

Tarpon Caye Lodge in Placencia: Located in the turquoise waters of southern Belize, you will stay on a private island with a maximum 10 anglers. It is possible to catch a grand slam while on the island and the best Permit fishing in the world surrounds you. Migrating tarpon move through the Victoria channel and Tarpon Caye sits in the middle of that channel. There's a reason that it is called Tarpon Caye.

El Pescador Lodge in San Pedro: El Pescador Lodge is widely known for its fishing, diving and other eco-adventure opportunities. You’ll find it just outside San Pedro. They’ll take you out on to the flats to go fishing for all three of the fish listed above. Plus, if you’re in need of lodging, El Pescador has you covered with a wide range of accommodations, including guest rooms in the main lodge and a number of different sizes of luxury beachfront villas. Simply put, this has everything you need for a magical, relaxing getaway, whether it’s just you, you and a partner or you and your family or friends.

Glover’s Reef Atoll: Glover’s Reef features saltwater flats and adjacent deep waters, which makes it one of the world’s best fishing spots for bonefish and tarpon. Keep in mind that all fishing here is catch and release only. The Glover’s Reef Basecamp gives you plenty of options for lodging, as well as a range of other activities you can enjoy during your stay when you’re not fishing, including kayaking, snorkeling and much more. There is also a nearby marine reserve, where you can experience some first-class guided fishing trips to learn about traditional Belizean handline fishing, which is particularly popular with inexperienced fishers and children.
