Williams Fork

Williams Fork | Overview

Tucked away in a rugged canyon south of Parshall, the Williams Fork River is a true hidden gem of Grand County fly fishing. Fed by the Williams Fork Reservoir, this tailwater offers clear, cold, and consistent flows that make it a dependable year-round fishery — a welcome find when other rivers run high or warm. It’s a technical stream that rewards patient anglers with wild browns, strong rainbows, and an occasional cutbow that’ll put a bend in your rod and a grin on your face. Expect smaller water, tight casting lanes, and trout that demand precision. But for those who like to stalk fish, sight-cast, and fine-tune their presentation, the “Willy” is pure magic. Whether you’re nymphing midges and baetis in early spring or throwing dry flies to rising fish on a summer evening, this river is all about finesse. A good drift matters more than fly choice — though having a few size 20 midges and micro-mayflies never hurts.

Current Conditions

March 2026: Flows on the Williams Fork have bumped up to around 95 CFS, which has improved fishing compared to the lower flows earlier this winter, although the river remains fairly technical and the trout here are not known for making poor life decisions. No need to rush out at sunrise, as fishing has been best during the warmer part of the day. Trout are holding in slower winter water, so focus on deeper runs, soft seams, and tailouts. The biggest key right now is getting your flies down. If you’re not occasionally ticking the bottom, you’re probably not fishing deep enough.
