Guide School

Not Just Fishing — Guide School Trains Guides and Great Anglers

Whether you dream of becoming a professional guide or you’re just an angler who wants to step up your game, the Winter Park Flyfisher Guide School is built for you. This course teaches the skills needed to confidently lead clients on the river, but it’s also an incredible way for everyday fishermen to hone their techniques, improve their teaching ability, and deepen their understanding of the sport.

You don’t need to be the world’s best angler to attend. Guiding is a learned skill — one built on communication, safety, water knowledge, and helping others succeed. Over the course of five days of on-river instruction, you’ll gain hands-on experience in everything from rigging and reading water to teaching clients, managing river safety, and building confidence as a leader on the water.

Led by shop owner Jeff Ehlert and our seasoned guide staff, this program combines decades of guiding experience on the Fraser River, Colorado River, and beyond into an immersive training designed for both future guides and passionate anglers alike.

More Information

Who This School Is For

  • Aspiring guides looking to learn the trade and prepare for professional opportunities
  • Anglers who want to sharpen their casting, reading water, and client-style teaching skills
  • Fishermen who simply want to fish smarter, safer, and with more confidence

Lodging

Lodging is not included, but there are plenty of options nearby in Fraser and Winter Park — from hotels and inns to campgrounds for those who prefer to keep it rustic. If you’d like help connecting with another student to share lodging, let us know.

CPR & First Aid

Colorado requires all professional guides to hold a valid First Aid & CPR certification. If you don’t already have one, we’ll point you toward local classes to complete your training.

Employment Opportunities

Graduates of our Guide School will be evaluated individually, and many of our past students have gone on to work as seasonal guides with Winter Park Flyfisher. Even if you’re not looking to guide professionally, you’ll walk away with skills that will make you a more effective and confident angler.
